Perth and Kinross Youth Services

Participants receiving their certificatesIn 2010 Perth and Kinross Youth Services (working with Skills Development Scotland and the YMCA) provided a ten week support and learning programme Linking into New Careers (LINC) to support 20 young people who were not in employment, education or training (NEET).

75% of participants said they felt happier about dealing with conflict and disagreements as a result. Knowing the frequency with which this group are charged with Breach of the Peace and Assault, the team estimates that there has been an average reduction of one charge per participant. That already represents a saving of £40,000 per course.

In addition at least three people moved into work – one was otherwise expected to become homeless. Several progressed into college and most others into some further training or support.

Some were of concern to the Youth Justice team and expected to move to the adult system shortly. They have not done so.
