West Glasgow Grandparent Carers Support Group

View of BroomhillThe West Glasgow Grandparent Carers Support Group has around 30 members caring for approximately 50 children. Their parents are unable to do so for a variety of reasons, including bereavement and placement by Social Work Services.

Community Development Workers from the then West Glasgow Community Health and Care Partnership (CHCP) supported members to plan and put into practice social, respite care and campaigning activities. The increased skills and confidence gained by members mean that it is less likely that they will need the involvement of a foster carer.

There is roughly a £500 differential per week between costs for kinship carers and foster carers. A conservative estimate would be that if kinship carers in the four Support Groups around Glasgow have kept 50 children from being fostered, this would save Glasgow City Council around £1.5 million per year.
